The show focuses on Christina Hawthorne, who is played by Pinkett Smith, a registered nurse at Richmond Trinity Hospital. She is extremely compassionate about her career and all the patients that she deals with. From the looks of the promotions Hawthorne is an a nurse that always sides with the patients despite what the hospital says.
Aside from her work she also is a single mother that struggles to raise her teenage daughter. Even though she has her career under control, she has a hard time balancing her personal and work life. Vartan plays Dr. Tom Wakefield, who is the Chief of Surgery for the hospital. Vartan's character is the opposite from Pinkett Smith's because Dr. Wakefield is one who does everything by the book and doesn't deviate from it.
"I really liked the concept of the show. I know there are a lot of medical dramas out there, but this one is different in the sense that it tells the story of what goes on in a hospital from the nurse's point of view," Vartan told E! Online when asked what attracted him to the show.
Even though the show is unique in it's own right, it has a lot to live up to being a drama about the medical field. We all have seen medical dramas like ER, Grey's Anatomy, and let's not forget classic St. Elsewhere that have made a name for themselves in this genre. These along with other medical shows out there will make it hard for Hawthorne to stand out on it's own. Many critics are skeptical that the show will be successful.
This year seems to be the year for medical shows to focus on nurses. Hawthorne is one of three shows that have its main character being a nurse instead of a doctor that is seen in most sitcoms. One of shows being Showtime's Nurse Jackie which aired not too long ago has the same premise as Hawthorne. Even though the show suffered some scrutiny, it did well in the ratings.
Although Hawthorne many expectations to fill, Tuesday night will prove it's worth watching. I have no doubt that this drama will be another hit for TNT. So watch out Kara Sedgwick because Jada Pinkett Smith is out of the waiting room and ready to scrubbing in.
